Thanks a million - Away3d seems like it will suit me really well.
I do still like papervision's setup, and may end up sticking with it, given
I don't need amazing effects. I'll see how well I get going in Away3d over a
week or so.

Well, just because Papervision3D is not being developed further, doesn't
mean it's a bad choice for a project now. If this is a project that won't
be modified and maintained a year from now and beyond, then go with what you
know if it gives you the capability you need.
That said, from what I know of Away3D it should meet this need and I think
Alternativa3d as well, but I am not sure if it meets 100% of your
requirements. But those engines will be supported by Molehill after it's
part of the Flash 10.2 or whatever player, so for the long term, I'd look at
one of those.

Subject: [Papervision3D] So.. Alternative to papervision for someone
starting a project?
Hi, I just joined the group and am really sad to see confirmation pv3d isn't
going anywhere soon.
I'm hoping someone could point me at a good solution instead?
I'm just starting work on a flash 3D project, I need to make multiple
viewports, and was hoping to treat them as movieclips, so as to be able to
do "24"-style multiple views of a situation, with a main floorplan view
(iso, or semi-iso) taking the left of the stage, and at least one other
viewport visible most of the time.
Its a complicated interface, and I was hoping to use as3isolib for the
isometric room setup, with papervision dae models for player and a few other
models as they come across them. This way my perspective shots could be like
children's cartoons, with just the player and their opponent visible in the
3d dynamic viewports, with particles etc flying around. (The iso shot would
have a floor grid, but it wouldn't carry across into the 3d perspective
shots.)
Is there another flash 3d engine that will give me:
-collada file import, preferably with animations... :P
-a layering system that is easy to fit onto the isolib window
(currently I just insert the papervision player model at the isolib layer
where a "dummy" player object is.)
-muliple moveable, and resizeable viewports
-a decent forum/ documentation base, preferably with examples
-a 0 cost setup for trialling it
Thanks to anyone who read this far, and especially if you have any thoughts?
